The 8 Korean Words Hiding in Every K-pop Song

You already know more Korean than you think. If you've listened to K-pop on repeat (guilty 🙋‍♀️), your ears have quietly collected a vocabulary. Today let's turn that passive listening into words you actually own. Here are the 8 words hiding in almost every song.

1. 사랑 (sarang) — love

The big one. You'll hear 사랑해 (I love you) and 사랑 everywhere. Fun fact: it stacks as ㅅ+ㅏ / ㄹ+ㅏ+ㅇ — a great first word to read.

2. 마음 (maeum) — heart, mind, feelings

Not the organ (that's 심장) — this is your emotional heart. "내 마음" = "my heart/feelings." When a lyric says 마음, it's talking about how they feel inside.

3. 너 (neo) — you

Casual "you." In songs it's intimate and direct: 너를 (neo-reul) = "you" as an object. If you hear 너 너 너, someone is definitely singing about a person.

4. 나 (na) — I, me

The partner to 너. 나는 (naneun) = "as for me." Half of all K-pop is just 너 and 나 — you and me — which is why these two are worth 10 flashcards each.

5. 눈물 (nunmul) — tears

Literally "eye" (눈) + "water" (물). Korean loves these transparent compounds. Once you know 눈 and 물 separately, 눈물 is free.

6. 꿈 (kkum) — dream

Both the sleeping kind and the hope-for-the-future kind, just like English. 꿈속에서 = "in a dream." That double ㄱ (ㄲ) is a tense sound — say "g" with a little squeeze.
